Video Transcript for Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box 2 Hook Safety Chain Review

Hi everyone, Aidan here with etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install these safety chains for your Gen-Y gooseneck. This is gonna be a 3/8 inch diameter chain and it's going to be 84 inches long. It's gonna be one section of chain with two clevis hook ends, and it's designed to work with your Gen-Y gooseneck, because the chain just feeds through the cross-shaped holes that are already existing on your pin box here, and there's no need to break out the torque wrench. It's got a 26,000 pound weight capacity and it's going to be a Grade 70 chain. Just like any other safety chain out there, it's gonna be that backup connection between your trailer and your vehicle in case there is an emergency disconnect, you still have this holding it in place.

And like I said earlier, the install process is really easy, there's no need to bolt anything down, break up the torque wrench, it's really just feeding that chain through the pin box, so let's check it out. To start with the install, we're gonna take off one of the clevis hook ends for our safety chains just by grabbing some needle-nose pliers and straightening out this pin right here, so we can take it out. May need to grab your pliers for that too just to get a better grip. And remove the clevis hook, and we can feed that free end of the chain through the gooseneck where we have this cross-shaped hole. So I'm just gonna feed it through this end right here and out the other side, and then we can get it all symmetrical.

So from here, I'm gonna get these nice and even with each other, just pulling the slack out of one side, adding it to the other until everything is draping evenly. Then, once everything's even, we can just grab our hook and our pins, run them back through each other and re-secure the hook by bending the cotter pin back out and securing the hook in place. And that's it for the install, it's a really simple process, and now, we've got our upgraded safety chains on our Gen-Y gooseneck..

After using my Genyhitch executive hitch for only one season, I liked it well enough to buy a second one , we decided to downsize our 5th wheel camper, and of course the new one has a different pin box, so it won’t fit, so I have one that fits a Rhino pin box , if anyone is interested, lol. It’s so nice when you unhook all you have in your box is the ball. Quality product!

by:

This is the 3 rd Gen-y hitch we’ve ordered. We love the hitch and appreciate ETrailers expert knowledge and the time they take to make sure the order is exactly what we need.
They even do a follow up email to let us know it’s been delivered!
Thank you Lauren!

Super easy install. Straighten cotter pin, pull it out, pull pin and hook is removed. Feed chain through, put hook and pin back on and bend cotter. Literally a 5 minute job! Grade 70 chain and about the same as sourcing elsewhere.

by:

Additional photos. I also had to use the top bolt holes to maintain the bed rail clearance.

by:

Appears to be as capable as advertised, but of course it's not one of those things you want to have to use. It's easy to add to the hitch as well, with a couple of Pliers to get the pin out on one hook.

by:

Does the job it was intended for

by:

What can you say it’s a chain!

by:

Works great and was easy to install.

by:

by:

by:

It came 2-3 days after ordering it as they said. Boxed up nicely. so fat I’m happy. Haven’t installed it yet because the camper is still in storage.

by:

Awesome communication and delivery of products when anticipated

  • Recommended Gen-Y Gooseneck Pin Box
I would be happy to answer it for you but I need some additional information. The Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY56FR you were looking at fits a Lippert 1621 pin box. This may be what you end up needing but in order to confirm that I'll need you to email me back a picture of the sticker on your pin box or you can send me the numbers. With that information I can call Lippert and find out which pin box you have so we can match it up with the right Gen-Y. You...

The Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter # RP85FR is going to be your best option as the Gen-Y pin boxes you found are not yet certified by Lippert to not void their frame warranty. You will need the Safety Chain Kit # RP49151 since you are switching to a ball connection. If you prefer to go with the Gen-Y and are not worried about the warranty then you will need to find the tongue weight of your trailer. The Gen-Y Hitch # GY58GR which is rated for a tongue...

The Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY98GR weighs a hefty 120 lbs. This is the only way to add a gooseneck pin box to a 5th wheel trailer with a Rhino Box. You will also need the Safety Chain with 2 Hooks item # GY49GR. State laws require use of safety chains with a gooseneck hitch and they are not included with the pin box.

Thanks for the picture and congrats on the new trailer! There is only one replacement option for the Turning Point Pin Box and it is the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY48GR. Reese doesn't have one. The Gen-Y will definitely work with your turnover ball system. You will also need the Safety Chain with 2 Hooks for Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY49GR. • Gen-Y Shock Absorbing Pin Box For 2018 Heartland Fuel 352 Toy Hauler
It appears that your 2018 Heartland Fuel 352 uses a standard 1621 pin box. You will want to confirm this by either the sticker on the pin box or the bolt hole measurements for the pin box. If you do not have a sticker the bolt holes are going to be 7-7/8" on center from the front holes to the center of the back holes. The vertical holes will have a 2" on center separation. Congrats on the new 5th wheel trailer! The Gen-Y Hitch 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # 325-GH-8045 you referenced fits a 1621 pin box so there is a strong possibility it is the one you will need. To confirm this is the correct part I will need to see the numbers on the pin box. There will be a sticker attached that will have a serial number, RPO number, and a date of manufacturing. If you could send me a picture of this sticker or email me back with those numbers I will be happy to...

The only gooseneck adapter that can replace a Lippert Turning Point pin box is the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY48GR. As far as tongue weight goes, the loaded pin weight of your Grand Design 260RD needs to be between 1,500 lbs - 3,000 lbs range for this pin box to work properly. The pin weight range of this pin box is 1,501-3,000 lbs which should be right about in your wheelhouse - I do recommend double checking though just to be sure. Yes, you can use the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel-Gooseneck Pin Box # GY36FR with your 2011 Ram 3500 and CM flatbed with recessed gooseneck ball. You will need the Safety Chain # GY49GR since you are switching to a ball connection and safety chains are required on trailers using a ball connection.
